Artist/activist J R exhibits freely in the streets of the world. Known for plastering cities with huge black-and-white wheatpastes of the people who live in those cities, J R came up with the idea for Inside Out after winning the million-dollar TED Prize in 2011, and was asked to make a wish. His request: to assemble a global social network of sorts, on the street, in which people have their pictures taken as part of what he hoped would become the world's largest participatory art project. From the suburbs of Paris to Israel/Palestine, from the slums of Kenya to the favelas of Brazil, his art is inextricably linked with activism.
J R's spectacular visual mode of intervention poses questions about artistic creation, the role of images in the age of globalization, and their widespread use, from intimate circles to mass distribution. Inside Out captures the scope of his vision and his innovative model for creating a global art. Packed with hundreds of images from the project, with contributions about J R and how his art functions as a worldwide platform for social change, where people either participate in an existing campaign, or launch a new action in their own community.
J R: Inside Out is a never-before-seen look at the work that is nearest and dearest to his heart, and is sure to appeal not only to J R fans but fans of public art and street art.
