We are currently experiencing a period of massive disinformation and misinformation, which metaphorically speaking has a tight noose around the American consciousness and conscience. In specific ways, distorted political and religious agendas thrust many of us into a perpetual state of confusion, manipulated compliance, and cognitive dissonance. Many of these issues present themselves through the realm of race, racialized politics, and conceptions of Blackness within African American culture. The ways we understand and protect knowledge and truth are attacked by some individuals through forms of concealment, such as intentional ambiguity, tribalism, and pseudo-religiosity. Introspection examines specific aspects of race, racialized politics, Black religiosity, and conceptions of an Ideal-Blackness that derive from questionable beliefs, which in turn contribute to the progressive bondage of the African American consciousness and conscience. Introspection also seeks to inform and elicit necessary self-examination within the individual and collective African American consciousness and conscience, by exploring the teachings of influential Black scholars and neglected aspects of our history.

Reviews for Introspection

""Cory May's Introspection delivers a conservative Black evangelical critique of dominant schools of hyper-liberal ideology and theology rooted in Black Nationalism and Black Power. Dr. May can be credited with restoring the legacy of Black evangelicalism, overlooked after departure of the moderating influence of M. L. King, and positioning that legacy as a corrective to the current alienation of Black theology from the conservative evangelical African American church and academy."" --Eric Newberg, Professor of Theological Historical Studies, Oral Roberts University ""Bringing theology and history to bear on our present politically heavy and racially complex context in the west, Dr. May offers learned and careful insight. . . . May unapologetically foregrounds the gospel and highlights the universality of the presence of Christ in the lives, and through the voices of, those who claim to be leading us to Christ, while also providing a much-needed critique of the status quo."" --L. S. Carlos A. Thompson, Assistant Professor of Christian Ministry and Disability Theology, Western Theological Seminary
