Mycology is the branch of biology that is concerned with the study of fungi, their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy and applications for human use. Fungi can be both harmful and beneficial to humans. Fungi produce antibiotics, toxins and secondary metabolites. Penicillin, lovastatin, griseofulvin, etc. are some drugs produced using fungi. Many varieties of fungi are used for the industrial production of vitamins, antibiotics and cholesterol-lowering drugs. Fungi can also be useful in suppressing plant pathogens like weeds, insects, mites, etc. in agriculture. This book provides comprehensive insights into the field of mycology.
