Brian N. Baird practiced clinically as a psychologist for two decades and chaired the department of Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University. He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1998 and served six terms in office. He consults on communication, ethics, and political strategy and is the founder and chair of the National Museum and Center for Service. Debra Mollen is Professor at Texas Woman’s University, a licensed psychologist, and Certified Sexuality Educator with the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. She is a Fellow in Divisions 17 and 35 of the American Psychological Association.
""Baird and Mollen set out to bridge the gap between academic coursework and the knowledge, skills, and emotional challenges of developing clinical skills through practicum and internship classes. They succeed admirably, providing students (and instructors!) with crucial information about the hidden curriculum of being a student in a clinical placement. They cover critical topics from beginning (how to find a placement, what paperwork is needed, how to benefit from practicum class) to the end (how to terminate cases and how to finish the placement). Along the way, they cover such important topics as self-care, diversity, ethics, supervision and how to handle assaults. The book is updated to include handling virtual therapy and how COVID-19 influences placement. This is a very valuable and unique resource for students becoming mental health professionals."" Nadya A. Fouad, Ph.D., ABPP, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA ""This Handbook has proved the must-have guide for our interns over the past 25 years and has improved with each edition. Baird and Mollen impressively bridge the gap between academic courses and crucial internships, helping trainees navigate the labyrinth of ethical, professional, relational, and self-care perils of practicing in the real world. An invaluable resource filled with practical guidance and skill exercises."" John C. Norcross, Ph.D., ABPP, University of Scranton and SUNY Upstate Medical University, USA
