Intellectual Property laws and Space Laws have different aims and purposes and present a prima facie challenge to each other. Owners of property produced by the human brain and inventions are granted rights known as Intellectual Property (IP) rights under the law. India's legal framework caters to the following areas of intellectual property: Trade Marks, Patents, Copyrights, Industrial designs, Geographical indications, Layout designs of integrated circuits, Varieties of plant, and Data protection under various Acts. The owner of IP has the right to forbid others from utilising it.

The Space Laws describe space as the ""province of all mankind."" Upholding the principles of international understanding and collaboration for the benefit of all is the aim of Space Law. Technological advancement and the commercialisation of space activities by private entities have increased concerns about IP rights in space. IP rights bring forward a number of important legal issues during space operations; these include ownership of rights, their violations, data protection, transfer and sharing. A number of complex issues pertaining to IP rights in Space operations have been examined in this volume. Dr Parineet Kaur is an Assistant Professor at the Indian Society of International Law (ISIL), New Delhi, India, and the Course Coordinator of the Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Laws and International Trade Law, which is conducted by the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy, a teaching wing of ISIL. She is the Head of the Centre of Advanced Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law. Prior to this, she had experience working for an IP Law firm. She is a graduate in Economics from Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, University of Delhi, and has completed her LL.B. from Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, and also LL.M. She has a Ph.D. in the area of Copyright and Competition Law in the Entertainment Industry from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, India. She is UGC NET qualified. She also represented India at the prestigious ""BRICS Forum of International Rule of Law"" in Beijing, has presented papers at various national and international conferences, and has many publications to her credit. Her areas of specialisation include Intellectual Property Law, Entertainment Law, Competition Law, International Law, and Human Rights Law. She has co-edited two books published by the Indian Society of International Law: International Refugee Law and Modern Warfare and International Humanitarian Law: Evolving Challenges and Normative Developments.
