The philosophy of CLB Architects, Inspired by Place, permeates all the firms design work, from public projects to bespoke homes. Their portfolio projects - timeless, thoughtful, distinct and beautiful - are examples of how to tread softly on the land in some of the world's most iconic landscapes. They introduce a new approach to form and materiality in a region where the design world is often limited by a nostalgic view of the past. Inspired By Place showcases ten homes by CLB Architects, many of which feature interiors by CLB's design team; these are always sophisticated yet comfortable and conceived as an extension of the architecture. From a streamlined modern masterpiece on the banks of the Snake River to architecture as connected barnlike structures to a private glass pavilion retreat perfectly oriented for wildlife viewing, CLB's work references local forms and vernaculars while speaking in a new architectural language for the Rocky Mountain West.

AUTHOR: Chase Reynolds Ewald is an active freelancer, columnist and editor focused on architecture, interiors, food, and travel in the American West. A graduate of Yale and the Graduate School of Journalism at U.C. Berkeley, she is the author of ten books, including Rustic Modern, American Rustic, The New Western Home, and Cabin Style. CLB Architects has spent a quarter of a century helping shift the design community in the Rocky Mountains from its reliance on historic materials and forms toward a newly expressed but still relevant and appropriate regionalism in one of the world's most scenic regions. From public projects and sustainable housing to scores of carefully crafted private residences, each project is uniquely inspired by place.

Reviews for Inspired By Place

Inspired by Place by Chase Reynolds Ewald gives us a richly-textured, visually appealing presentation of residential designs which are influenced by the dramatic landscapes in which they are set. As much as I can appreciate a traditional western home a la The Ponderosa, these are not one of them. Instead, we see utterly clean lines and finishes; interactive yet separate spaces; a warmth that comes from natural lightness and brightness; and walls and fenestration which incorporate rather than separate the interior vistas with the awe-inspiring views outside. The occupants are part of their environs instead of being isolated from them. While the floor plans reflect modern tastes in functionality and features, the structures themselves are timeless in the way they fit into the contours and substance of their surroundings. A beautiful book. --Kimberlee J Benart for Readers' Favorite Ten very powerful wood and stone houses, presented in the fullest color and in the fullest natural context. --Peter Miller ...the firm makes some of the best modern houses in the American West. These are houses that nestle into their sites and capably take advantage of the jaw-dropping scenery that is beautifully captured in big photographs in this large-format monograph. The eleven houses in the aptly titled Inspired by Place are primarily documented by glossy color photographs; each project has around forty pages, with all but six of those pages (text, plans, inspiration images) comprised of photos. -- A Daily Dose of Architecture
