HOPE IN THE HARD PLACES Journey Toward Healing Through Invisible Illness. When a young man's health begins to unravel without explanation, he is thrust into a battle he never asked for-and one he must navigate largely on his own. Hope in the Hard places tells the true story of Greg, whose relentless symptoms defied diagnosis and left him searching for answers in a medical world unprepared for the complexity of his illness.

As Greg fights to stay afloat-researching, seeking specialists, and pushing for treatment-his parents stand 3,000 miles away, doing everything they can to support him from a distance. They become his advocates, his sounding board, and his steady encouragement, helping him recognize progress even when it comes in the smallest steps. But the journey is Greg's: his determination, his courage, and his refusal to give up become the driving force of this memoir.

Through Greg's experience, this book shines a light on the hidden struggles of those living with complex, vector-borne infections. It reveals the emotional and physical toll of being dismissed, misunderstood, or overlooked-and the strength required to keep searching when the path forward is anything but clear.

Inside this powerful memoir, readers will discover:

A gripping, real-life medical mystery driven by one man's persistence The emotional and physical challenges of navigating a misunderstood illness The quiet but vital role of family support from afar A message of resilience for anyone fighting for answers in their own health journey

Hope in the Hard Places is ultimately a testament to Greg's courage. It is a reminder that even when the road is long and uncertain, determination can carve a way forward-and hope can be found in the smallest signs of healing.

Lynnette M. Wheeler spends her winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, and her summers on Lake Embden in Maine-places that have shaped her love of community, nature, and quiet reflection. For thirty years, she worked as a psychotherapist, guiding others through their own seasons of struggle and resilience. She also taught Psychology and Sociology of Marriage and Family at community colleges, sharing her passion for understanding the human experience with students of all ages.A lifelong lover of movement, she found joy in pickleball, paddleboarding, and an active lifestyle-until life asked her to slow down and listen more deeply. When injury temporarily closed those physical doors, she returned to writing, a passion she had carried since childhood and rediscovered with renewed devotion during the pandemic. She is the author of Missy Lynn's Extraordinary Journey, its sequel Missy Lynn Returns, and A Walk of Faith-A Poetic Journey Through Life. She has also co authored several books with her close friend, Dr. George McGuire. Lynnette now serves as a social club director in her community and continues to find meaning in connection, service, and creative expression. She has been married for forty eight years. This memoir grew from a mother's love and a desire to honor her son Greg's courage as he navigated a bewildering and often invisible illness. What began as a search for answers became a journey of acceptance, gratitude, and spiritual awareness. Through Greg's struggle, she learned that the greatest lessons rarely come from triumph, but from the willingness to endure, to stay connected, and to keep moving forward when life asks more of us than we ever imagined. She wrote this book to give voice to those living with hidden illnesses, to shed light on experiences often dismissed or misunderstood, and to remind others that even in the darkest seasons, there is always a path-however faint-leading back toward hope. Above all, she wrote it so Greg would never feel alone or abandoned, and so others walking similar paths might feel seen.
