Michael was inspired to write this book because he was fascinated by the large number of historical churches on a small island like Antigua. He was also curious about the factors that lead enslaved Africans to convert to the religion of their enslavers. He believes that the history of slavery should be taught in schools and that historical churches should be preserved as reminders of the sacrifice, courage and perseverance of those enslaved men and women, many of whom laboured to build these churches.
