Handbook of Porous Media, Third Edition offers a comprehensive overview of the latest theories on flow, transport, and heat-exchange processes in porous media. It also details sophisticated porous media models which can be used to improve the accuracy of modeling in a variety of practical applications.

Featuring contributions from leading experts in their respective fields, this book:

Presents the general characteristics and modeling of porous media, such as multiscale modeling of porous media, two-phase flow, compressible porous media, and dispersion in porous media Addresses the fundamental topics of transport in porous media, including theoretical models of transport, membrane transport phenomena, modeling transport properties, and transport in biomedical applications Describes several important aspects of turbulence in porous media, including advances in modeling turbulence phenomena in heterogeneous porous media Explores heat transfer of nanofluids as well as thermal transport in porous media, including forced convection, double diffusive convection, high-heat flux applications, and thermal behavior of poroelastic media Covers geological applications in porous media, including modeling and experimental challenges related to oil fields, CO2 migration, groundwater flows, and velocity measurements Discusses relevant attributes of experimental work or numerical techniques whenever applicable

Paving the way for the establishment of multidisciplinary areas of research, Handbook of Porous Media, Third Edition further enhances cooperation between engineers and scientists by providing a valuable reference for addressing some of the most challenging issues in engineering and the hydrogeological, biological, and biomedical sciences.

Kambiz Vafai holds a B.Sc (highest honors) in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA, and an M.Sc and Ph.D in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, USA. Widely published and highly decorated, he currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, USA, where he started as the Presidential Chair. Before joining the University of California, Dr. Vafai was with The Ohio State University, Columbus, USA, where he won outstanding research awards in assistant, associate, and full professor categories. He is the fellow of several societies, has graduated numerous Ph.D and M.Sc students, and has supervised many post docs and visiting scholars. Dr. Vafai is the recipient of the ASME Classic Paper Award and the ASME Memorial Award, which are amongst the most prestigious awards in the field of heat transfer. He was given the International Society of Porous Media (InterPore) Highest Award, is the recipient of the 75th Anniversary Medal of the ASME Heat Transfer Division, and holds 12 US patents associated with electronic cooling and medical applications. He is one of the highest cited in his fields of research, using both ISI (Highly Cited Category) and Google Scholar metrics. His research interests include transport through porous media, multiphase transport, aircraft brakes, biomedical applications, microcantilever-based biosensors, biofilms, electronic cooling, macromolecule transport through arteries, cooling enhancement investigations, modeling of tissue and organs, natural convection in complex configurations, analysis of porous insulations, heat flux applications, free surface flows, flat-shaped heat pipes, thermal design and modeling, and feasibility, optimization, and parametric studies for various engineering applications and power electronics.

Reviews for Handbook of Porous Media

... continues the tradition of the first two editions in providing a comprehensive review in each of a number of areas of research into the complex phenomena that comprise transport in porous media. Beginners in any aspect of research into porous media would be remiss not to begin their literature search in these volumes. Article writers, who are world experts in their fields, provide up-to-date reviews of the 'state of play' in their selected areas, which cover the spectrum of fundamental modeling and quantitative formulation to practical application of theory. The editor has drawn once again from the deep international reservoir of porous media expertise. The breadth of the contributions, all gathered in one place, provides a valuable resource for researchers at any stage of their research careers. -Robert McKibbin, Massey University, Albany, New Zealand ... provides an excellent, up-to-date treatise on the theoretical aspects of single and multiphase flows in porous media. The need to properly extend Darcy's law is clearly illustrated whereby allowing those in oil reservoir modeling and others dealing with multiphase flow the means for history matching through the employment of solid scientific basis. The sections dealing with thermal transport of simple and complex fluids in porous media together with geological applications will serve well not only the sophisticated practitioner but also the interested beginner in the area of porous media transport. -Dr. Jacob Masliyah, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada The book offers an excellent overview of the latest theories on flow, transport, and heat-exchange processes in porous media. It provides a sound basis for students and scientists from various disciplines to gain a profound insight into topical porous-media applications. The contributing authors are all renowned experts in their fields. -Rainer Helmig, University of Stuttgart, Germany The greatest strength of this handbook is its coverage of the muscular and growing field of porous media. This third edition is truly a tour de force of the ideas that account for the vigorous growth of the field, for example, multiscale physics and modeling, advanced theories, fractured media, transport theory, turbulence, nanofluids, cellular materials, groundwater flows, and geological and geothermal applications. ... Professor Vafai created an exceptional reference for the field. -Adrian Bejan, J. A. Jones Distinguished Professor, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA Those who liked the second edition of this handbook (published now already some ten years ago) will surely be impressed with this new edition. The third edition is certainly not a simple rewrite or superficial update of previous chapters and topics. Many of the authors are different and various topics have been added, with most or all contributions very much geared toward the current state of the art and its application across disciplinary boundaries, including industry. -Martinus Th. van Genuchten, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Utrecht University, The Netherlands This book presents the most interesting leading-edge topics on porous media. You will find what you need in this book when you begin a frontier research about transport phenomena in a porous medium. -Peixue Jiang, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China This text will make a valuable addition to most researchers' bookshelves and will most likely stimulate further research efforts in porous media theory. -J. H. Cushman, President, International Society for Porous Media and University Distinguished Professor, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA
