Two years, 190,000 miles, 197 countries, one play. For the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth the Globe Theatre in London undertook an unparalleled journey to share Hamlet with the entire world. The tour was the brainchild of Dominic Dromgoole, artistic director of the Globe, and in Hamlet Globe to Globe, Dromgoole takes readers along with him on this wildly ambitious expedition.

From performing in sweltering deserts, capital and remote cities, heaving marketplaces and on Pacific islands, and despite food poisoning in Mexico, the threat of ambush in Somaliland, an Ebola epidemic in West Africa, and political upheaval in Ukraine, the Globe's players tirelessly pushed on. They carried their own props, instruments, and costumes throughout the journey, and could construct an entire set in less than two hours. Dromgoole introduces this impressive cast of sturdy souls, recounting the highs and lows of their tour, paying witness to Shakespeare's power to transcend borders and bring the world closer together.

Dromgoole also shows us the world through the prism of Shakespeare and why, in its mystery, it resonates so widely--how a sixteenth-century play can touch the lives of men and women in Sudan, citizens of Beijing, and Syrian refugees alike. Through the lens of this epic theatrical journey, Dromgoole gleans new insight into Shakespeare's masterpiece, exploring the play's history, its meaning, and its pleasures, and offering a dramatic and heartfelt testament to Shakespeare's enduring presence on the modern stage.

Reviews for Hamlet: Globe to Globe: Two Years, 190,000 Miles, 197 Countries, One Play

Advance Praise for Hamlet Globe to Globe -[A] thoroughly enjoyable and charming story . . . Besides detailing the two-year tour itself, it's a story of the play, its themes and language, famous past players, and how it has been performed and received over the years . . . Sly, witty, and delightful--a glorious Shakespearean romp.---Kirkus Reviews (starred review) -With candor, humor, and erudition, English theater director Dromgoole tells [an] incredible story . . . Dromgoole is wise and witty; thoughtful, self-assured, even cocky . . . But he is never dull. His mission was to bring Hamlet to the world to show that Hamlet is the world, and he succeeded admirably. A wide readership, not just Shakespeare buffs and scholars, can enjoy this book.---Publishers Weekly -The tireless Dromgoole goes on a journey that would kill most of us, and connects our greatest poet to every corner of the human experience. Utterly extraordinary.---Emma Thompson -This is an amazing story about a bold and eye-popping journey. I loved it. Dominic Dromgoole writes about Shakespeare and touring the globe the way he ran the Globe--with passion, insight, relish and irresistible humour.---Nicholas Hytner, former Artistic Director of London's National Theatre -Dominic Dromgoole's recounting of the Globe Theatre's exhausting global tour of Hamlet is exhilarating. The playing company's intrepid journey around the world--performing Hamlet's own troubled journey--succeeds in making the familiar unfamiliar and enables in turn a deeply illuminating journey into the play itself.---Professor James Shapiro, author of 1599 and 1606 -This deeply humane, consistently enthralling account of a theatrical odyssey encompasses travelogue and literary criticism, theatre history and introspective narrative, political commentary and philosophical reflection with beguiling readability.---Sir Stanley Wells, editor of The Oxford Shakespeare and author of Shakespeare & Co. Praise for the Globe to Globe Hamlet Tour: -Ambitious [and] audacious.---NPR, -Morning Edition- -The Globe's two-year tour is a world-class event.---Huffington Post -An astonishing odyssey . . . One of the most ambitious touring productions in history . . . [An] epic tour . . . The 16-strong company have performed on every corner of the Earth at venues ranging from castles to refugee camps--and despite various challenges faced on their journey, they did not cancel one show. . . [An] impressive feat.---Daily Beast -Under Dromgoole's direction, this rendition of Hamlet tunes into a lighter spirit, that many of us probably never saw within it. What Dromgoole outlines is that comedies and tragedies often tread opposite sides of the same coin.---Associated Press -The first genuine world tour in theatre history.---International Herald Tribune -An unprecedented theatrical adventure . . . [An] epic tour.---Guardian (UK) -The Globe to Globe tour has been the last and loudest of the distinctive Shakespeare 'collections' spearheaded by Dromgoole during his tenure.---Financial Times (UK) -Globe to Globe Hamlet holds a mirror up to the nature of theatre in Shakespeare's lifetime--as in, no special effects, no elaborate set, just simple storytelling at its best. In short, it lets his true genius shine through.---Toronto Star (Canada) -The new production of Shakespeare's classic tragedy by Shakespeare's Globe has put the world on stage. And to great effect.---Hindu (India) -Dominic Dromgoole and Bill Buckhurst deliver a crisp, energetic production that remains open to multiple interpretations and creates a space for audiences to find their own meanings.---New Zealand Herald -The chemistry between the actors is palpable, and the work of director Dominic Dromgoole is perfect.---Buenos Aires Herald (Argentina) -A compelling Hamlet by Shakespeare's Globe theatre allows the text to dazzle and shine---NRC Handelsblad (Netherlands) -Something not to be missed---Sudan Vision -The show created a wonderful change of experience for the Lao audience . . . Truly rewarding.---Vientiane Times (Laos) -Shakespeare's Globe's touring production of Hamlet offers a simple staging of the classic with strong performances.---Business Times (Singapore) -The Globe to Globe Hamlet tour has played to over a hundred thousand people in all corners of the world--in theatres, temples, public squares and refugee camps--sparking discussion and joy wherever it goes.---Brussels Times -[An] ambitious world tour . . . An epic accomplishment for Shakespearean theatre . . . [A] feat of theatrical ingenuity.---CPH Post (Denmark) -An audacious idea . . . A spritely production that offers a surefooted clarity of the text. It is also often--and surprisingly--funny . . . This deceptively simple idea fuels the liveliness of the proceedings . . . It is the passion of the ensemble that most drives this theatrical audacity. Nearly two hundred countries and more than two hundred performances in and it seems as fresh as it surely was on opening night . . . A fresh and entertaining approach (one quite likely more akin to Shakespeare's era than our own).---Luxemburger Wort
