""In Grace and Life, Paul Deterding gives us an irenic, thorough, and reliable presentation of the meaning of the Pastoral Epistles. He moves sure-footedly through the Greek text for each section and then comments on and applies the meaning for life in Christ today. The essays in the second part of the volume gather an immense number of observations into accessible summaries of Paul's theology. This is a traditional, conservative commentary in the best sense!"" --Jeff Gibbs, Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Concordia Seminary, Missouri ""Providing a confessional Lutheran perspective, Grace and Life is a most valuable theological resource! More than a commentary, it is a comprehensive study of the Pastoral Epistles. With detailed documentation, it addresses contemporary questions of authorship and setting. Each epistle is covered with a translation, isagogical remarks, textual notes, and commentary. Concluding with pertinent essays on topics found in the Pastorals and extended notes on key Greek terms, it warrants a place in every theological library, personal and institutional."" --John C. Wohlrabe Jr., Great Lakes Regional Vice President, LCMS ""Christianity is not for 'lone rangers.' Every Christian needs a good pastor. And to shape your expectations the place to begin is with the Pastoral Epistles. Paul Deterding is an expert guide, a well-trained New Testament scholar, a specialist in Pauline literature, an experienced parish pastor, and an effective teacher as a university professor and a high school teacher. I highly recommend this well-written and edifying volume."" --Paul R. Raabe, Professor Emeritus, Concordia Seminary ""In Grace and Life, Dr. Deterding shares his study and reflections on the Pastoral Letters, arising from years of pastoral and teaching experience. The commentary, essays, and notes invite the reader to explore how these three short letters of the apostle Paul speak volumes about pastoral ministry, Pauline theology, Christian doctrine, and the life of the church, including regular citations from Martin Luther, the Book of Concord, and contemporary Lutheran resources of theology and worship."" --James Fickenscher, Assistant Professor of Exegetical Theology, Concordia Seminary, Missouri
