Some books offer theological reflection, others practical pastoral advice. Good Courage: Inspiration for the Evening of Life does both and more. The book spotlights the experience of ageing.

To deepen the devotional and religious life, the author, Thomas van der Horst, a Roman Catholic theologian, provides commentary on traditional prayers, like the Rosary, and meditations synchronized with the liturgical calendar. Biblical stories prompt discussion alongside the writings of spiritual elders, Jewish and Christian alike.

Good Courage is full of lively stories. Van der Horst is a pastoral counselor, specializing in elderly care. The book originated during group sharing sessions. Here, we meet vibrant characters. There's an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Den Hartogh, whose affection for each other blooms, even as their house brims over with flowers, and one of them goes blind. A man, forgetful due to dementia, receives the assurance of unconditional love from his partner-as by spontaneous grace. Guardian angels, evoked in prayers, walk through these pages. There are explorations of miscellaneous themes, relating to trees, motherhood, and pigeons.

Good Courage addresses issues that face us during that particular stage as we age and death draws nearer. Old age brings losses, of family, friends, and work routines; loneliness, pain, and various maladies. This time of life brings gains, too, of wisdom, present moment awareness, heartfelt friendship, beauty, and the abiding presence of the divine.

Good Courage: Inspiration for the Evening of Life is both a spiritual resource, related to ageing, and a celebration of life itself.
