Mary Kells is Rector of St Martin & St Paul, Canterbury, and is an Executive Member of WATCH (Women and the Church) and its national lead on gender inclusive liturgy. Since 2020 she has run inclusive liturgy writing workshops for various dioceses and the Scottish Episcopal Church. She recently instituted Liturgy Online, an online platform for all who wish to participate in gender inclusive liturgy.
'Setting the need for inclusive liturgy within the wider context of living in a patriarchal culture that is failing girls and women, this valuable resource for all Christian groups aims to improve our sense of our own worth. Accessible, lively, practical and always gentle, Kells challenges the reader to think about the relationships between language and power. The book provides clear and thoughtful introductions to issues such as the relationship between gender-neutral language and words which make women visible, as well as samples of Kells' own liturgical writing and an extensive list of further resources. Even if you are in the Church of England, you may be surprised at just how much freedom already exists to create inclusive liturgy within confession, absolution, collects, intercessions, eucharistic prefaces and blessings.' -- Helen King 'God Beyond Gender invites us to question why we use predominantly masculine language in worship and how this limits our understanding of the divine. Rooting our curiosity in scripture, tradition and experience, Mary Kells encourages the “wilding” of our imagination. Her liturgical creativity is a beautiful resource and an inspiration to broaden our own horizons.' -- Sue Hammersley ‘Mary Kells has written a guide to the creation and leadership of inclusive liturgy that is wise, considered, practical and poetic, all at once, richly illustrated by her own prayer texts. It will be of immense encouragement to those new to this field, as well as refreshing the vision of those who have been creating inclusive liturgy for years.’ -- Nicola Slee
