In Go Quietly Now, Corinne Cowan recounts her experience of living with vocal cord paralysis (VCP) for twenty years. As a member of the online Vocal Cord Paralysis Support Group, she uses the written word to give voice to a disability that afflicts hundreds of people, but escapes being described by them.

Vocal impairment and its accompanying respiratory problems leave victims in search of coping mechanisms tailored to their specific needs. An invisible disability, VCP sets an individual apart from mainstream society and can completely alter a life.

When the paralysis curtailed the familiar and routine, Corinne eventually learned to accommodate its limits by adopting a more subdued and quiet way of life. The process of letting go led to new perceptions and beliefs. Her most revealing realization was the affirmation of her faith.
