Originating in funeral rites during the Punic Wars of the 3rd century BC, the Roman gladiator games have come to symbolize the spectacle and savagery of Republican and Imperial Rome. Francois Gilbert is an associate researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, studying Roman militaria. Founder of one of the first re-enactment groups in France (Pax Augusta), he was able to study, reconstruct and experiment with their equipment and combat techniques. Giuseppe Rava, a leading military history illustrator, is inspired by the works of the great military artists, such as Detaille, Meissonier, Roechling, Lady Butler, Ottenfeld and Angus McBride.
