The story of Nijinsky, the Russian Dancer is a tale of brilliance and despair, of innocence and stardom, celebrity, sensitivity, and tragedy, and amongst the saddest historical cases of artistic success versus mental health.

Like many geniuses, his psyche was overflowing with an intense creativity and dramatically affected his mental health, yet his ideas stood at the vanguard of modernism. In later years he has been recognised as the initiator of neoclassicism in dance and the instigator of the Twentieth Century School of Modern Dance. His drawings have been compared to those of Wassily Kandinsky, one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and his written thoughts considered visionary.

Jill Rivers was introduced to Nijinsky's story by filmmaker Paul Cox suring the filming of the dancers diaries in 2001, resulting in an invitation to stay with Nijinsky's daughter Tamara in Phoenix, Arizona. The further she probed into her research, the more she realised that Nijinsky's story needed to be retold for the artists of today and their audiences.
