This three-level course designed for complete beginners takes students to Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The chapters are short - six pages in each - and offer a good variety of motivating exercises to get students speaking German from the beginning. The course is clearly structured and attractive to use with lots of photographs and cartoon illustrations.

Kursbuch A1 includes three Plateau chapters at intervals to revise and expand on the material covered in the 12 main chapters. All the topics are up-to-date and reflect the interests of 21st-century teenagers. The exercises in the workbook mirror those in the textbook - so each double page in the coursebook has a corresponding spread in the workbook. Self-evaluation tests are also included at the end of the workbook.

The first two levels of the course have a 30-minute DVD to practise comprehension and introduce new vocabulary. In addition to the traditional teachers' book, a DVD-Rom version is available and contains all course components as well as interactive whiteboard material.
