Michael Simanga, assistant professor of Africana studies at Morehouse College ""I wish I had Dr. Terence Lester's book From Dropout to Doctorate when I was just starting as a teacher in the Delta. Hearing his story and understanding the personal and systemic effects of racism, poverty, and injustice would have immensely helped me to serve students like Jalen more effectively. . . . Dr. Lester has gifted us this book for this moment and for our posterity. He shares searing personal stories of tragedy and hardship that moves the crisis in our educational system beyond statistics and into the realm of human impact. At the same time, he puts that doctorate to work. I found myself poring over his tables and illustrations, his definitions and theories. He adds academic ballast to his intimate narrative, so we come to understand not simply his individual story, but the historic and systemic forces at work that affect millions today.""
