From Dawn to Dusk is a practical, hands-on guide to mastering the techniques required to take better, more creative, landscape photographs.

This updated edition of From Dawn to Dusk features new text and photographs to cover the latest advances in photographic technology. The book's unique structure leads the reader on an hour-by-hour, picture-by-picture journey from dawn to dusk, and into night, with each chapter focussing on the benefits and challenges of shooting at that particular time of the day.

The book is structured around the available light during the different times of the day, highlighting suitable landscape types, styles of photography and processing techniques for each moment. There are regular technique panels to help readers hone their camera skills, and each chapter concludes with an awe-inspiring double-page image that demonstrates the results that are possible – accompanied by an extended caption and a personal anecdote from the photographer. One of the key purposes of the book is to illustrate that – contrary to common belief – you don't always need the perfect light or the best time of day to shoot great landscapes. There are opportunities throughout each day (and night), and in different light and weather, to create fantastic images. The theme is reflected in a design that leads the reader from dark to bright to dark once more, reflecting the light in the images. The result is a uniquely engaging guide that will help the reader to become a master of light: that key component of all landscape photography.

Reviews for From Dawn to Dusk: Mastering the Light in Landscape Photography

Leading landscape Photographers Ross Hoddinott and Mark Bauer pool their expertise in this updated version of their popular how-to book. Designed to maximise your chances of success in the field whatever the time of day, it explores the practical side of planning and timing shoots as well as covering camera gear, techniques and framing. Chapters are dedicated to different times of day, from dawn, morning and midday of afternoon, dusk, twilight and night. Each section looks at the benefits, challenges and unique qualities of the light as the sun changes position and highlights the best landscape to shoot, recommended photographic approaches and post-processing tools to employ. As well as covering essential tips for capturing classic views, the book includes alternative techniques such as intentional camera movement (ICM), abstracts and minimalist landscapes. As you’d expect, the authors’ photographs (taken mainly in the UK) are stunning and show the amazing results that can be achieved with the appropriate planning and skills. Deeper insights into each photographer’s creative and technical approaches are offered in ‘final shots’ at the end of each chapter, including Hoddinott’s image of the Cobb in Lyme Regis (below) taken early one winter’s morning. There’s plenty here to help both seasoned photographers and those just starting out. * Outdoor Photography magazine *
