The Magic of Robots that Has Fascinated Us from Ancient Myths to Modern Science Fiction Robots are machines that are designed or constructed to operate like a human. They are often seen as symbols of technology and hope for the future. Robots have been appearing in stories and art since ancient times, and they have helped to shape our imaginations and fears. Ancient Myths The first stories of robots can be found in ancient myths and legends. In the Greek myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor falls in love with a statue he has created. He prays to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, to bring the statue to life. Aphrodite grants his wish, and the statue comes to life as Galatea. In the Chinese myth of Yinyangshi, a man named Yinyangshi creates a mechanical man to help him with his work. The man is so impressed with the mechanical man's abilities that he marries him. These myths suggest that the idea of creating machines that can think and act like humans has been around for centuries.
