Increasing energy demand has necessitated the use of more efficient modes of transportation. Two primary modes of energy transfer include pipelines and transmission lines. Pipelines ensure the bulk transport of gas and oil, and transmission lines ensure the transfer of electrical energy.
Transmission lines and pipelines both facilitate the connection of supply and demand centers. Transmission lines and pipelines are linear systems that frequently run parallel or intersect at various locations. Due to land availability constraints, more and more pipelines and transmission lines are laid in the same corridors. Pipelines near transmission lines are susceptible to accelerated corrosion due to alternating current voltage from high voltage alternating current power lines.
Underground pipelines/structures are typically coated to arrest corrosion from outside. Cathodic protection system as secondary protection, supplement coatings to prevent decay.
