Fane Edge was an enigma. His descendants have inherited a mix of bewildering facts and figures.
He was appointed to the position of Provost Marshal of Norfolk Island by Governor Arthur Phillip RN on 20 March 1792.
At that time Fane was Adjutant of Sydney - even though he was an enlisted Private holding the rank of Sergeant in the 102nd Regiment of Foot - later to be known as the Rum Corps. How did this happen?
Why had a Sergeant been appointed as Adjutant of Sydney?
Why was he then appointed Provost Marshal at the time soldiers were sent to replace marines on Norfolk island?
Why was he appointed to command an island militia unit comprising of ex- seamen and marines from HMS Sirius?
Why was he made Acting Chaplain?
Who were Mary Bodkin and Ann Edge?
Was he the coxswain of the government boat?
And, why was he suspended from duty for disgraceful conduct?
None of this makes sense.
