Robert Byron (1905-41) was an author from a privileged background with a rebellious streak. He is considered one of the twentieth century's greatest travel writers as well as a noted art critic and historian. He died seventy years ago when the ship he was travelling in as a war correspondent was torpedoed by a U-boat in the North Atlantic.
