Essentials of Period Style: A Sourcebook for Stage and Production Designers covers the visual, social, and political dynamics of multiple epochs and cultures and discusses how these trends affect the design of the architecture, costumes, and furnishings of the time.

This book relates these characteristics and cultural movements to the design needs students encounter as they design a period production. Each chapter contains examples of period style in both theatre and film from a variety of notable productions and a glossary of specialized terms and words used in the chapter. Technological and aesthetic developments that affect design, lighting, and music are also included.

This is a textbook meant for Period Styles courses in Theatre programs.

Reviews for Essentials of Period Style: A Sourcebook for Stage and Production Designers

How delightful of Mr. Tine, to take us on a journey of visual spectacle and discovery so essential for anyone needing to know the high points in life, art and architecture as they weave the net of human creative development. ã It's as if the author has time travelled to each period, waded through its essence and come back to tell us what we must not miss on our own journey of recollection, of the important elements we need to fulfill any and all recreations which might involve historical subjects. ã - Professor Elizabeth Popiel, Western Connecticut State University, School of Visual and Performing Arts. Scenic Designer USA Local 829 IATSE. Hal Tine, experienced Broadway and regional designer and educator, has created an excellent resource for beginning the exploration of historical periods as they relate to all aspects of design. -Natalie Robin, Stage Directions
