Self & Soulwork

Using erotic poetry to explore the intricacies of love, desire, and sexuality, author Raphael Rod Birney shows us how to overcome the straitlaced upbringing so many of us absorbed, to celebrate instead our own passionate existence and our joy in experiencing life as sensual beings.

What began as a loving ode to his wife-whose own poems feature here as well-became a journey into the deepest realms of intimacy and connection for Raphael Rod Birney. One poem at a time, Birney discovered a path to integrating sexual aliveness and spirituality by uniting the realms of the five erotic languages with the art of sexual haiku.

Building upon a long career in psychology and a deep interest in spiritual practice, Birney also draws dynamic inspiration from sources as disparate as Zen poems, the Old Testament Song of Songs, and the transcendent inner journeys of Eastern mysticism, as well as the philosophy of renowned sexologist Jaiya's Erotic Blueprints.

More than simply provocative, Erotic Haiku is a lively. courageous bedside companion, a lovely exploration of what it means to celebrate freely the ecstasy of intimacy and desire.

Raphael Rod Birney, MD, is a psychiatrist who enjoys exploring the relationship between spiritual practice, neuroscience, quantum physics, and depth psychology. Rod has been actively engaged in his own inner work for over forty years. He continues to study modern psychology and ancient systems of wisdom. In our increasingly soulless world, he recognizes the importance of connecting with our depths to find meaning and purpose in our lives. He offers psychotherapy and SoulWork (spiritual psychology) sessions. He hopes someday he will be able to use traditional plant-based medicine to help heal human consciousness, as it has been used for thousands of years. He recognizes that all of us have a certain level of trauma and its resulting tensions that block our awareness of pleasure. He hopes these haikus will open you to reclaim pleasure, sensuality, and a passionate sex life, all of which help us heal. He thanks Yahya for making his musings into a coherent book! Suzanna Yahya Nadler, MEd, LPC, is an energetic catalyst, awakening your connection to the pleasure of being a fully alive, sexual being within nature, and in relationship to others. As a body-focused movement therapist working with individuals, couples, and groups, she gently but firmly encourages the development of your conscious/witness self through claiming and inhabiting all of your body and welcoming all of your inner parts to be cared for and understood. Recently she became an Erotic Blueprint coach, which she integrates into her teaching and couples work.
