Electrochemical Power Sources: Fundamentals, Systems, and Applications: Simulation Models of Secondary Batteries: From Quantum Physics to Techno-economic Scale gives an overview of the different modeling approaches for battery simulation models used for different purposes, such as battery pack design or state of charge estimation. Solutions for different applications are presented, and a classification into electrical, thermal, aging models is given, along with degree of precision ranging from physico-chemical, over impedance based to energy flow or empirical models with their specific advantages and disadvantages.

In applications such as a vehicle energy management, it is important to know the state of the battery, e.g., what is the remaining driving range or when should the battery be replaced.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Julia Kowal, Einsteinufer 11, 10587 Berlin, Germany, head of chair Electrical Energy Storage Technologies at TU Berlin, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Julia Kowal has more than 15 years of experience in battery and supercap research, with a focus on simulation and modelling, especially impedance-based modelling. During her Ph.D. at the chair Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems (Prof. Dirk Uwe Sauer) of RWTH Aachen University she investigated mainly lead-acid batteries and supercaps and developed impedance-based simulation models and tools for the analysis of impedance data. Afterwards she was the head of the group Modelling, Analysis and Lifetime Prediction at the same chair. Since 2014, she is professor for Electrical Energy Storage Technology at TU Berlin with a continued focus on simulation models, impedance spectroscopy and battery management systems for lithium-ion, lead-acid and metal-air batteries Prof. Dr. Dirk Uwe Sauer, Jägerstr. 17/19, 52066 Aachen, Germany, head of chair Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems at RWTH Aachen,Dr. Dirk Uwe Sauer works on batteries and renewable energy systems since 1992. After 11 years at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE he became a Professor for “Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems” at RWTH Aachen University, the first chair of its kind at German Universities. His research focus is on storage systems in electric vehicles of any kind and in grids with a high penetration of renewable energies, post-mortem analysis, ageing and lifetime prediction of batteries, modelling and diagnostics for batteries, impedance spectroscopy and impedance based modelling, and energy system analysis including sector coupling. He is editor of the “Journal of Energy Storage” and together with Prof. Martin Winter the chair of the annual conference “Advance battery power”.
