ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- In our bookshop this is shelved in Crime and the promotional quotes on the jacket spruik it as a 'thriller'. While I don't see it as a crime thriller, it is a riveting mystery that is gradually revealed within a multi-faceted story centred around the world of scientific pharmaceutical drug trials. Hurley cleverly has five narrators give us their understanding of events surrounding the death of a young 'star-on-the-rise' doctor: The former schoolmate, the girlfriend, the research assistant, the sister, the PR 'fixer' - each give their view in a story of refugees, immigrants and family, of scientific endeavour and discovery, and of business venture capital deal-making. Underpinning all of this is money. Serious money and power. A tightly written tale of misfortune and misdoings. Craig Kirchner

Former refugee David Tran becomes the Golden Boy of Australian medical research and invents a drug that could transform immunology. Eight volunteers are recruited for the first human trial, a crucial step on the path to global fame for David and windfall gains for his investors. But when David dies in baffling circumstances, motives are put under the microscope.

With its origins in a real-life drug trial that ended in tragedy, Eight Lives is told from the perspectives of David's friends, family and business associates, who all played a role in his downfall.

A smart, sophisticated thriller that explores power, class and prejudice, Eight Lives will keep you engrossed until the last page.
