""From the time of Irenaeus to that of Jonathan Edwards, motor automatisms have long puzzled--and indeed scandalized--the church. Greene succeeds in situating these manifestations common to Pentecostal and Charismatic spirituality within the context of the prophetic tradition of Scripture. His tour de force survey of the Old and New Testaments will leave readers with the profound reminder that the Spirit blows where he wills."" --Matthew C. McGuire, author of A Magical World: How the Bible Makes Sense of the Supernatural ""Merrill G. Greene's Drunk in the Spirit is a bold and enlightening exploration of the supernatural love of God and discerning the truth from the counterfeit. His scholarly yet accessible approach challenges readers to reconsider what's possible through the Holy Spirit. As one of his friends, I've seen firsthand Merrill's passion for truth and his genuine heart for the church. This book is a must-read!"" --Brandon Spain, Host, Unrefined Podcast ""Greene provides a detailed study of the many places in the Bible where God chooses to work through 'ecstatic' experiences. Scholars, pastors, and students alike will benefit from the thorough exegesis and diligent engagement with the historical context of Scripture throughout. Christians of all denominational backgrounds will find this to be a valuable resource for carefully considering the outworkings and purposes of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in both ancient and modern contexts."" --David J. Fuller, Director of Library Services, Canadian Baptist Theological Seminary and College ""From the alliterative chapter titles to the meticulous footnotes, Dr. Greene provides an accessible yet thought-provoking treatment of 'altered states of consciousness' found throughout the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. He successfully brings attention to texts that are often glossed over, and he raises fresh questions which have practical and theological ramifications for laypeople and scholars alike. While I may not align with every conclusion, I appreciate the valuable insight and dialogue this book fosters."" --Michael Gabizon, Associate Professor of Jewish Studies, Moody Bible Institute ""This book by Dr. Greene is a profound and helpful resource for anyone looking to know more about how altered states of consciousness fit into Christian beliefs. Drunk in the Spirit is a well-researched examination of the Biblical texts, some church history, and current phenomena within some current church circles. Even if you do not find yourself agreeing with all his conclusions, this is an essential read on the topic."" --Andy Ardern, Lead Pastor, Wayfarers' Church, Nova Scotia, Canada
