Sowing Seeds is a creative and playful worship and Bible storytelling resource for babies, toddlers and children.

Sowing Seeds aims to encourage participation, discipleship and leadership from children's earliest years, using storytelling, singing, colour, repetition, art and lots and lots of movement! Peer-learning is actively encouraged with many opportunities for young children to learn from each other.

Groups are invited to build their own Sowing Seeds sessions, choosing from different options. Leaders can use the material to create a service to follow the pattern of their church's Sunday worship, a simple midweek baby and toddler singing session, or anything in between!

Book 1 includes:

Over 18 weeks' worth of fully worked-out sessions organized into 3-5 week units, including resources for Advent, Christmas, Epiphany and Jesus' Baptism.

All the information you need to set up and run Sowing Seeds in your group

Plenty of opportunities to tailor the material to your own context, resources and tradition

All sorts of creative 'starter ideas' for using everyday art and play resources to spark children's imaginations and engagement as they respond to the biblical stories.

The Units are:

Getting ready for baby Jesus: five weeks journeying through Advent to Christmas

Lighting the Advent Wreath: five weeks journeying through Advent to Christmas

Jesus, Light of the World!: five weeks including Epiphany and Candlemas

John the Baptist: three weeks including Jesus Baptism

This resource was previously known as Diddy Disciples.

Reviews for Sowing Seeds Book 1: Bible storytelling and worship with children, includes Advent, Christmas and Epiphany

'Sowing Seeds is an invaluable blend of Sharon Moughtin’s reflective practice and contemporary thinking about childhood spirituality. The result is an exceptional and inspiring resource for churches working with the very youngest children. A powerful case for seeing why the very young deserve the very best, and this is a well-tested method for doing that.' -- Dr Rebecca Nye, Godly Play expert and researcher and consultant in children's spirituality 'I'm excited by Sowing Seeds! It's a celebration of Psalm 8.2 and all that babies and toddlers bring to worship. Movement, stories, actions and songs combine in carefully crafted sessions to draw groups into a new way of worshipping that will enrich everyone involved. I can't wait to start using it.' -- The Revd Mary Hawes, former National Children and Youth Adviser, The Church of England 'Sowing Seeds is being taken up enthusiastically by a growing number of parishes in the Diocese of Southwark. Helping young children grow into the fullness of Christ through creative, age-appropriate engagement is a wonderful journey of adventure and discovery; and this book, which I gladly commend, will be an essential resource for anyone starting out on that path.' -- The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark 'Sowing Seeds is an invaluable resource that we use in school to support our collective worship and Religious Education curriculum with the youngest of pupils. It helpfully provides some background knowledge of theological concepts and Bible stories to support the staff leading the sessions. I would highly recommend this to schools as it is unlike any other resource we have found.' -- Kate Penfold-Attride, Headteacher, St Matthew's Church of England Primary School, Redhill 'Sowing Seeds is a gift to the church. Sharon Moughtin manages to combine sharp biblical insight, creative use of the liturgy, the immersive experience of storytelling, and a great deal of fun in a single resource. What you have here is a way to engage the children in your church, school or home with robust biblical scholarship, the lessons liturgy teaches without words, and an experience of worshipping God in community. Just be warned: you'll be humming the Sowing Seeds songs all week long.' -- The Revd Dr Casey Strine, Theological Adviser to the House of Bishops and Secretary for Theology 'This resource approaches worship and storytelling with reverence and joy! Children and leaders alike will learn from the liturgical intelligence, sensitivity and natural language of Sharon Moughtin's approach. An inspirational resource for all on the way of discipleship, including special attention to the new texts for baptism.' -- Dr Matthew Salisbury, National Liturgy and Worship, Church of England 'This is a flexible resource that acknowledges the importance and significance of enabling the youngest at church to engage in worship and begin a faith journey. The book not only offers ideas for a range of different settings and of personality and learning styles, but is also clearly built upon a theological and developmental understanding of children and faith. This is a resource that we will be using within our church setting, as we seek to engage and empower children from the youngest age in their understanding of God, faith, themselves and the world.' -- Steve Chalke, founder and leader, Oasis Global
