Lama Karma Sonam Dhagpo, born Ian Hackett, is the founder and director of Tig-Le House in Margaret River, Western Australia. A dedicated teacher of mindfulness, meditation and universalist Buddha-Dharma, he began his Path in 1987 through diverse meditation traditions in Perth. His practice was shaped early by time spent on Yuat country, where a deep connection with nature and First Nations wisdom informed his understanding of spirituality and ecology. His formal training follows the lineage of the late Venerable Tenzin Namgyal Rinpoche and Anandha Bodhi.Ian's lifelong bond with the natural world fostered a parallel career in ecological restoration. For over 30 years he has worked across agriculture, horticulture, Permaculture and regenerative bushland management throughout Western Australia, the Northern Rivers of NSW and the rainforests of Far North Queensland. These experiences strengthened his belief that human wellbeing and healthy ecosystems are inseparable. In 2006, seeking deeper stability and health, he committed to the Universalist Buddha-Dharma tradition under Lama Karma Chime Shore at the Origins Centre in Balingup. At Lama Chime's request he began teaching there, later establishing Tig-Le House as a community hub for mindfulness, Buddhist studies and Ecodharma retreats.Anointed as Lama Karma Sonam Dhagpo in 2024, he now offers teachings and nature-based retreats across the Southwest and contributes to local Permaculture Design Courses. His work brings together Dharma, ecology and mindful engagement with the land.Sonam honours his teachers, including Lama Karma Chime Shore, Lama Choyin Rinpoche, H.H. 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, and the nuns of Rumtek, as well as the influence of Indigenous Elders from Yuat, Miriwoong, Gurindji, Bundjalung and Noongar country. His teachings continue to weave ancient Dharma with contemporary ecological and social realities, encouraging compassion, connection and shared Refuge for all beings.
