This book, Decent Aid: An Introduction to Ethics in Philanthropy, by David Mutemwa is a tour de force in the realm of philanthropic ethics research as it invites scholars, practitioners, and policymakers alike to engage in thoughtful dialogue on the ethical imperatives that should guide philanthropic strategies in developing regions, particularly in Africa. At its apex, it contributes toward making aid provision an ethical matter as the author proposes a model for ethical evaluation of philanthropic strategies from an interdisciplinary perspective comprising social work, common law, and practical theology.

Besides its significance in the current field of discourse and research, this book also exposes the global influence on African regions exerted through some so-called international charitable or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The author employs a combination of Western theories and methodological approaches and traditional African philosophy, making it possible to understand the ethical dimensions of philanthropy both in an African context and from a Western perspective. This will help charitable organizations to avoid implementing strategies that could be unethical from the local perspective, a critical aspect for both local communities and international organizations as it guides them in the best practices to adopt while implementing their projects in African contexts.

Reviews for Decent Aid

""In his book, David Mutemwa rigorously applied all standards for academic writing, creating a clear and transparent structure that is to the point and produces clear conclusions. All of this is of high value when using his findings in the practice of charitable organizations. The academic quality and the practical readability of the text are outstanding features of Mr. Mutemwa's writing character. I am happy to endorse this manuscript for publication."" --Michal Opatrný, associate professor for pastoral theology, University of South Bohemia ""I strongly recommend the book Decent Aid: An Introduction to Ethics in Philanthropy. The expert erudition of the author, advanced methodological approach, and exceptional readability of the text give this book its place among other scholarly works in the ethical dimension of social and charitable work, especially in the African context."" --Rudolf Svoboda, Vice-Rector for Internal Evaluation and Accreditation, University of South Bohemia ""This book uses Kant's moral theory and African traditional Ubuntu philosophy to propose what David calls 'decent aid' as philanthropic strategy that can be utilized by charitable organizations that operate in local communities. This is an important book that confronts any unethical conduct of charities within the framework of social ethics and systematic theology. The book is not only relevant to theologians and sociologists as organizational leaders will find it a worthwhile read."" --Solomon Kgatle, professor of Christian spirituality, church history, and missiology, University of South Africa
