This book describes the design, construction and commissioning of the cryogenic systems at the European Spallation Source, a new Big Science Facility. It also describes the experiences and lessons learned in building a complex cryogenic system in a brand new laboratory with significant in-kind contributions. Cryogenics is a key enabling technology for ESS, playing a pivotal role in the accelerator, target and instrument systems. The ESS cryogenic system is both large and state-of-the-art. This book describes the ESS cryogenic system, including the evolution of the design, final design, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning and operating experience. Detailed design information and operating data will be provided. Lessons learned will be highlighted and the unique aspects of working in a brand new laboratory with significant in-kind contributions will be covered.

Key Features:

The book will be written by experts in the field, providing a best-practice handbook for the implementation/operation of state-of-the-art cryogenic technologies in a big-science facility – i.e. aim is to give readers practical tools/approaches that they can use in their own research setting. Detailed design information and operating data will be provided for the cryogenic system (including evolution of cryogenic system designs). Will cover challenges, solutions and lessons learned resulting from a green-field site with significant in-kind contributions from multiple partners. The book will contain extensive references that will aid further research and study.

John Weisend is currently a Senior Accelerator Engineer at The European Spallation Source, Lund, Sweden. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Lund University. He received his PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he investigated engineering applications of He II. He has worked at the SSC Laboratory; the Centre D’Etudes Nucleaires Grenoble; the Deutsches Elecktronen-Synchrotron Laboratory (DESY); the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC); the National Science Foundation; and Michigan State University. Professor Weisend’s research interests include He II and large-scale accelerator cryogenics. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cryogenic Society of America (CSA). He has led the CSA Short Course Programme since 2001. He is Chief Technical Editor of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. In addition to coauthoring more than 80 technical papers, Professor Weisend is the author of He is for Helium, as well as the co-author of Cryogenic Two-Phase Flow and Cryogenic Safety. He is the editor of the Handbook of Cryogenic Engineering and of Cryostat Design. He writes a regular column, “Cryo Bios”, for the publication Cold Facts and is a member of both the Cryogenic Engineering Conference and International Cryogenic Engineering Conference Boards.

Reviews for Cryogenic Technologies at the European Spallation Source: A big science case study

The European Spallation Source (ESS), nearing completion, will be a state-of-the-art research facility for probing materials with neutrons. [...] ESS is not only a large science project but a new laboratory built on a “green field” site. [...] . Documenting this endeavor to build not only a large science facility but also a new laboratory provided a prime motivation for this book. [...] The authors essentially provide a series of detailed design reports about all things cryogenic at ESS. [...] A valuable feature of the book is an organizational pattern common to each chapter. [...] The depth of information is most impressive. [...] The scope of information provided will make Cryogenic Technologies at the European Spallation Source a valuable reference for scientific project managers while also providing a wealth of technical information about ESS cryogenics and large-scale cryogenic systems. -- Tom Peterson * Cold Facts, Cryogenic Society of America *
