Tait Coles has been teaching science for 20 years. In that time he has had the privilege of learning with, and from, hundreds of young people, many of whom would be classed as having a social or economic disadvantage. Tait is currently a deputy headteacher at a school in Bradford. He has experience of leading on teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment, quality assurance, behaviour and attitudes, as well as initial teacher education. Tait has been described as 'a classroom maverick and a respected radical of modern teaching' (Ian Gilbert, Independent Thinking, 2014). He works relentlessly to ensure that every student achieves or exceeds their academic potential, but he knows that education is much more than this. Tait has seen first-hand the influence that critical pedagogy has had on his students, enabling them to develop a sustained social awareness and a critical consciousness.
Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is one of the best books written on the meaning, purpose and use of critical pedagogy in the classroom in the past few decades. Not only is it beautifully written, while being rigorous and accessible, but it also covers a wide area of crucial concerns regarding what critical pedagogy is and is not, especially in light of the myths and falsehoods used to attack it. Moreover, it is more than a defence and articulation regarding critical pedagogy - it is a text that every educator should read in order to evaluate and rethink their own classroom visions and practices as part of a broader practice of freedom and empowerment. This is a brilliant book and is sorely needed at a time when all levels of education are under attack by extremist groups. Education and critical pedagogy are crucial in a democracy and this book makes that case with clarity, urgency and passion. * Henry A. Giroux, Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy at McMaster University, Canada * Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is a thorough, robust and timely argument for the need for criticality in teaching, to empower students and teachers alike. Educators will undoubtedly benefit from this book. We need to engage with politics, history, academia and core values and this book offers vital guidance in all these areas. * Jeffrey Boakye, author, educator, speaker, broadcaster and journalist * Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion is a refreshing, wide-ranging read with references locally and internationally that takes a practical and inspiring approach to critical pedagogy. * Evie Manning, co-artistic director, Common Wealth/Speakers Corner, Bradford *
