Livingston practised law as a litigation specialist in Melbourne, before launching his consulting practice to work with the UN, World Bank and others in more than 50 developing countries around the world. He holds a PhD in law and has lectured on justice at Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and Berkeley. Livingston is Director of the Centre for Judicial Studies, and was Adjunct Professor Law at the University of Sydney. He now lives with his wife Miyako over looking Sydney Harbour. In 2019, he was awarded the Order of Australia for significant services to justice nationally and internationally.
