This book introduces comparative and international education (CIE) to new students of the field.

Comparative and International Education surveys a spectrum of theories, methods, and practices for the benefit of both novice scholars and seasoned practitioners. It resourcefully explores comparative education’s successive historical phases, from its institutional heyday as “development education” in the 1960s to its emerging contemporary directions. A global field of unprecedented geopolitical extent across shifting spaces, comparative education is too complex to be captured by old dichotomies of development vs. underdevelopment. This book assembles a rich picture of the field’s many ways of knowing, scrutinizing education’s role in societies, and comparisons among national learning outcomes. It examines contemporary reconfigurations, including education for sustainable development and our interdependent futures, and rethinks the spatial dimensions and the vocabularies we use in studying, researching, and comparing education internationally. We hope to open avenues for the teaching and study of education in its local and geopolitical context. Research topics are illustrated by case-studies from scholars in the field. This volume will help you discover how comparative and international education (CIE) in the 21st century is practiced and where it is heading.

Reviews for Comparative and International Education: An Introduction

This volume offers a refreshingly original contribution to comparative and international education, deliberately shifting the field’s centre of gravity away from Western narratives. With clarity and nuance, it traces the evolution of theories, debates, and practices across eras, making it an invaluable resource for students and scholars seeking to grasp the field’s contexts and contents across space and time. -- Linda Chisholm, Emeritus Professor, Centre for Education Rights and Transformation, University of Johannesburg, South Africa Gottlieb, Iyengar and Witenstein offer a robust and accessible academic resource through Comparative and International Education: An Introduction. In this six-part book, Gottlieb and colleagues have compiled a resource that serves as a primer for an important sub-field in the study of education, paying particular attention to its history, widely used theories and methods, and practices. The text concludes with a set of succinct contributions from experts who discuss a variety of topics, including education finance, virtual education delivery, and climate-focused education. As a whole, Comparative and International Education: An Introduction is sophisticated, practical, and well-written. This is an invaluable resource for early career professionals and seasoned scholars alike. -- Meseret F. Hailu, Assistant Professor of Higher Education Louise McBee Institute of Higher Education University of Georgia, USA
