John Fitzhugh Millar, who built full-size, operational copies of two Revolutionary War ships for the Bicentennial, has written many historical books, mostly about the material culture of the colonial and Revolutionary periods. He lives in Williamsburg, Virginia.
""John Millar's Colonial Black and Indigenous Cultural Leaders is a fascinating and essential book. With care and clarity, it brings long-overlooked figures to life--Black and Indigenous Americans whose creativity, intellect, and courage helped shape our nation from the beginning. This is the kind of history that nourishes the soul and expands the story of who we are. I'm grateful this book exists."" --Eleanor Herman, author of Mistress of the Vatican ""John Millar has produced a highly informative and useful reference guide that explores the important yet (all too often) little-known contributions of colonial-era Black and Indigenous leaders. This book would be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about how these fascinating individuals helped shape the society that we live in today."" --Sean M. Heuvel, editor of The Revolutionary War Memoirs of Major General William Heath
