This text adresses the problem of desiging and testing modern displays and other cockpit systems. There appears to be a lack of communication between the users, testers and designers of these display systems. Users are not letting designers know what they want the system to do. Designers have little feedback from the testers of these systems due to the production process. Users fail to let the testers know what they consider to be the most important features of the display system in order to evaluate them appropriately. There is no standard criteria for testing and so evaluations and results vary from tester to tester. This book attempts to offer better ways of evaluating these display systems.

Reviews for Cockpit Displays: Test and Evaluation

'As experts in flight display evaluation, Newman and Greeley have put word Test back in cockpit displays. A Newman and Greeley not only understand the cockpit display technology, the test methodology, but also the impact of the technology on the pilot operator. Cockpit Displays: Test and Evaluation contains the necessary knowledge for display test and evaluation and should be considered an essential reference for conducting cockpit display test.' Loran Haworth, Former Chair, DOD Flight Symbology Working Group, Experimental Test Pilot and Engineering Research Psychologist, US Army (retired) California (The opinion here expressed is that of Loran Haworth and not necessarily that of the U.S. Army, Department of Defense, The Federal Aviation Administration or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.) '...this book will be an invaluable reference/guide to those involved in all aspects of cockpit display design, test and evaluation now and into the foreseeable future.' The Aerospace Professional '...this is a good book, structured sensibly in small tidy chapters, but with masses of detail ... It should be useful and interesting reading for the display test engineer, the flight test engineeer or the flight test manager.' Ergonomics Abstracts 'The authors...have been very thorough in their research and step-by-step walkthrough of the design process...Newman and Greeley present a clear and well-supported argument for a comprehensive design philosophy...I hope that those working in the industry pay this book the attention it deserves.'
