The path to elite performance in a racket sport is much like the path through a minefield to safety. There are no warning signs, but there are invisible hazards that lie in wait. There are no reliable maps-largely because the path itself varies for different people. Things one learns along the way may accelerate progress for a while, only to lead to a developmental dead-end in the long run. This book provides knowledge and strategies that will enable coaches and parents to preempt many developmental problems that are commonly encountered along the developmental path, and to greatly enhance the happiness and prospects of the children in their care.

The content of this book isn't complex, but provides very valuable information for parents, players and coaches. Great for tennis, table tennis, squash, and racket ball. The approach advocated encourages and challenges learners to explore, to experience, and to master the techniques and principles that make them effective.

"As a teenager, Mike Symonds played table tennis, representing England in many countries, and gathered ideas that facilitated the acquisition of skills. His best win was in an international match against China where he beat Chang Shih-lin, who was ranked third in the world at the time. After emigrating to South Africa, he took up squash and resumed competing in table tennis, winning seven South African Men's Singles Championship titles. Within a few years, he became resident squash professional at the Transvaal Automobile Club in Johannesburg. As a squash coach, he guided his players to South African championship titles and world rankings. He tries to be the catalyst that helps players experience the essence of each technique, thereby facilitating instantaneous improvement. ""Practice does not make perfect unless you have experienced perfection and thus know what to practice,"" he says. Eventually Mike moved from Johannesburg back to England, then to Perth in Western Australia where he resides today. Tal Ben-Shahar is a New York Times best-selling author. He taught the most popular course in Harvard and is currently writing, consulting, and lecturing worldwide on positive psychology and leadership."
