The purpose of this book is to support and strengthen the trend of integrating the Gestalt approach into psychotherapeutic work with people with mental disorders. The book provides examples of the ideas of author's colleagues and his own attempts to translate the terms of psychopathology into the language in order to enrich both approaches with the novelty that is so necessary for the growth and with strengthening of the professional interest of Gestalt therapists in clinical psychotherapy. The relevance of understanding psychopathological disorders from the perspective of the Gestalt approach, as well as the need to develop adaptive strategies for psychotherapy of people suffering from these disorders, is undoubted. It opens the door to a new space of awareness, experimentation, research, and co-creation that we can explore together with our colleagues and our clients - fellow travelers who are looking for new boundaries of existence and new ways to live in this difficult and ever-changing world.

The idea to write the book was fueled by the deep interest I had in the mental world of those who literally feel what is happening in the environment in a different way or those who do not deny reality but do not want to know anything about it and run away from it into neurotic perception or into the ""bodily madness"" of conversion disorder. I would like to note that working with people with mental disorders in the Gestalt Therapy paradigm not only helped me to step away from the one-sided norm-centered expert position of a clinical psychologist, but also to complete it with a commitment to existential dialogue, as well as the ability to experimentally seek new ways of creative adjustment for each individual client and for myself in this process. In addition, it highlighted my own ""dark"" spots, and helped me to feel that in humanistic psychotherapy, a specialist firstly is a personality, and only then he or she is a professional.

Reviews for Clinical Gestalt Therapy

..One of the strengths of the book is its clear and accessible language, making complex gestalt therapy concepts understandable to a broad audience. The author blends theoretical foundations with practical examples, creating a well-rounded resource that is valuable for both beginners and experienced therapists. The central theme revolves around the gestalt philosophy of wholeness and the integration of fragmented aspects of one's self. The book delves into how this approach can be particularly effective in addressing distress, as it encourages individuals to become more aware of their present experiences and take responsibility for their emotions. The practical techniques and exercises outlined in the book are another highlight. The author introduces various gestalt interventions that can be easily adapted to different therapeutic settings. Case studies illustrate the application of these techniques, providing readers with real-world examples of how Gestalt Therapy can be transformative in addressing distress. One notable aspect is the emphasis on the therapeutic relationship. The author underscores the importance of the therapist-client connection in Gestalt Therapy, promoting a collaborative and non-judgmental atmosphere that fosters self-exploration. This relational focus adds depth to the book and aligns with contemporary therapeutic approaches that recognize the significance of the therapeutic alliance. Furthermore, the book addresses potential challenges and ethical considerations in Gestalt Therapy, offering a balanced perspective on its limitations. This acknowledgment of the approach's nuances adds credibility and pragmatism to the narrative. In conclusion, ""Gestalt Therapy for Distress"" stands out as an exceptional resource in the field. It combines theoretical foundations, practical applications, and a compassionate approach to guide both therapists and clients toward a deeper understanding of distress and the path to healing. Whether you are a professional in the mental health field or an individual seeking self-help resources, this book is a valuable addition to your library. -- Yaro Starak is an international teacher of Gestalt Therapy, co-director of the Gestalt Art Therapy Center (Australia), a founding member of Gestalt Australia & New Zealand (GANZ), an accreditation organization for of Gestalt Therapy training in Australia and New Zealand, author of the books ""Risking Being Alive"", ""Group work skills"" and ""The Princess and the Dragon"".
