There have been other great accounts of the great man - notably the classic Beaglehole biography - but this for my money is the most exhilaratingly readable. I defy anybody, of any age, to resist the story of the boy from Whitby who changed the history of exploration, science and seamanship in his cramped little ship Endeavour and whose voyages added to our knowledge of geography, plants and animals.
