TWO NOVELLAS BY TALENTED AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR BERNARD MARIN ON THE LONG SHADOW CAST BY WAR... BREAKFAST WITH PAUL Two old friends meet every Saturday for breakfast. Outwardly, their lives have followed similar paths – both are Jewish, both migrated from Europe after the war – but their childhoods are very different and shaped them in ways they are struggling to understand. Will their differences ultimately divide them, or bring them closer together?

SURVIVING Stasiek emigrated to Australia as a teenager before the Second World War, in which he served as a stretcher-bearer. He survived the Holocaust, but his beloved older brother, Beniek, whom he'd replaced on the boat to Australia, was murdered, as were parents Pinkus and Sara, sister Gutka, and many of his uncles and aunts.

As an old man he reflects on his life and the price he has paid for surviving.
