ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- A long hot smoke-filled summer becomes more horrifying when a young woman's body is found. She is the victim of a murderer nicknamed the Blue Moon Killer, who has picking on girls in the vicinity of the Parramatta River. Adam Bowman, a journalist who is often overlooked, grew up on the grounds of an exclusive school where the latest victim's body has been discovered, and this is enough for his boss to send him there to report on the scene. It's not long before he becomes known to the detectives on the case, in particular DS Rose Riley, nor is it long before he has his own theories - and time is ticking, because the killer is poised to strike again... A compulsively readable crime novel, with the added bonus of the Sydney setting making it all very visual to local readers!  Lindy

A long, burning summer in Sydney. A young woman found murdered in the deserted grounds of an elite boarding school. A serial killer preying on victims along the banks of the Parramatta River. A city on edge.

Adam Bowman, a battling journalist who grew up as the son of a teacher at Prince Albert College, might be the only person who can uncover the links between the school murder and the 'Blue Moon Killer'. But he will have to go into the darkest places of his childhood to piece together the clues. Detective Sergeant Rose Riley, meanwhile, is part of the taskforce desperately trying to find the killer before he strikes again. Adam Bowman's excavation of his past might turn out to be Rose's biggest trump card or it may bring the whole investigation crashing down, and put her own life in danger.

Taut, suspenseful and utterly compelling, Black River is the best thriller you'll read this year.

Matthew Spencer grew up on the grounds of the King's School in Parramatta, as the son of a teacher who lived permanently in school housing there. Long summers on the largely deserted campus while exploring the remnant bush with its tributary of the Parramatta River inspired this novel. Matthew was a journalist and editor for The Australian newspaper for many years before leaving his job to work full-time on Black River.
