Looking at the complex relationship between the discipline of history and the writing of lives, this key textbook provides an original and insightful introduction to a growing and increasingly important area of historical scholarship and research. Examining key works that have changed the nature of biography, Barbara Caine also explores the way biographical narrative and life stories have become a central preoccupation for history.

Outlining the main features of contemporary historical biography, this is an ideal companion for undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses on historiography, theory and history, theory and methods, historical methodology, history and life/biographical/autobiographical writing, and life-writing courses on English or creative writing degrees.

Reviews for Biography and History

Biography and History is succinct, thoughtful, addresses the right sort of issues and is readable and stimulating for students. This new edition is a fresh but subtle revision, that brings themes up to date, reflects on trends, and some important shifts which have taken place since the first edition. * Deborah Leigh Simonton, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark * Barbara Caine explores biography’s relations with history in a study which covers major topics and authors: informed, lucid and thoughtful, she provides a digest of key ideas and raises important new questions about how individual lives are being read as history. * Clare Brant, King's College London, UK * Barbara Caine’s admirably clear and concise book is both a stimulating analysis of the relationship between biography, on the one hand, and history and autobiography, on the other, and a manifesto for the importance of the individual life history as a genre. * Jeremy Popkin, University of Kentucky, USA *
