"""Biodynamics is distinguished by the fact that it is a return from and through a mechanized prodigal society, not a regression. It is a return in a new way, like returning to your childhood home as an adult."" -- Stewart LundyThis collection of articles--compiled primarily by Hugh Courtney from the periodical Applied Biodynamics--introduces the basics of making the essential biodynamic preparations. What is discussed in these articles is much more than just ways to make preparations successfully; it also represents, for the most part, Hugh's way of doing so with lots of practical tips for success. The articles are down to earth, literally, with very little theory, and provide the technical knowhow to make the biodynamic preparations described by Rudolf Steiner in his Agriculture Course and further developed ever since by several generations of biodynamic practitioners.

""Biodynamics is a reorientation of agriculture to its primary purpose--not commerce, but life. Anthroposophy is not a fanatical movement, nor is it an iconoclastic movement. As Steiner says, we need cow horns to make the biodynamic preparations, but we do not need to be 'bull-headed' about it."" -- Stewart LundyBiodynamics for Beginners,

edited and introduced by Stewart Lundy and liberally illustrated throughout, is the perfect guidebook for anyone who is serious about becoming a successful, hands-on biodynamic farmer or gardener."

"Hugh J. Courtney (1932-2020), a veteran and librarian, discovered Steiner's agriculture course in 1975 at a health food store in College Park, Maryland. This led him to Josephine Porter, who was making biodynamic preparations according to Steiner's indications. He apprenticed under Josephine and, when she died in 1984, took up her work. He created the Josephine Porter Institute in Woolwine, VA, where he has been making and selling preparations (six compost preparations and 3 others), editing the newsletter Applied Biodynamics, and consulting on all aspects of the biodynamic approach. Hugh Jordan Courtney passed the threshold quietly in his sleep on June 15, 2020, at the age of 87 in Woolwine, Virginia. Stewart Lundy co-owns Perennial Roots Farm in Accomac, Virginia, and has been farming with his wife since 2010. He studied biodynamics under Hugh Courtney's supervision and continued the practice, independently exploring the realms of anthroposophy, mysticism, and beyond. Stewart works with the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics. He is an avid reader, amateur alchemist, and consultant. He studied primary school education at Toorak Teachers College and is a former farmer and biodynamic certifier for Demeter Bio-Dynamic Research Institute. He lives in Cranbourne South, Victoria, Australia. Philippe Coderey comes from a long line of vine growers and farmers in southern France and Switzerland. His family name finds its roots in the old French verb codurer--meaning to cultivate vineyards--and his ancestors were named for their vocation during the 11th century. He grew up on the family vineyard in Provence, France, and was fortunate to be exposed to traditional viticulture techniques through elders of the family. Patricia Smith was the editor and contributing writer for Applied Biodynamics from 2000 to 2010. She lives in southwest Virginia and came to the journal as a volunteer during the summer of 1997. Later that year, she was hired as an assistant preparations maker. Abigail Porter grew up on a biodynamic dairy farm in Northeast Pennsylvania. Following a career in the arts (jewelry design and production), she returned to her roots with a move to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and felt a need to rehabilitate the poorest garden soil she had ever seen. Abby served on the Board of Directors of the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics for five years and wrote for their periodical, Applied Biodynamics, for ten years. She currently consults and leads workshops on beginning biodynamics for backyard gardeners. German-Michael Hahn, like a lawyer, pleas on behalf of trees and forest. He lectures to local councils, calls on mayors, vis-its farmers and forest owners, and speaks with hunters. The wooded areas he looks after are scattered across twenty-one towns in the region of Wrzburg in Bavaria, an area of 2,500 hectares of communal and private forest, plus he shares responsibility for an equally large area of state forest. Dennis Klocek is a teacher, researcher, artist, gardener, and alchemist. He graduated with an MFA in 1975 from Temple University's Tyler School of Art. He then taught for seven years at a community college. In 1982, his love for the work of Rudolf Steiner took him to Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento, California, where he has been the director of their Consciousness Studies Program (""Goethean Studies"") since 1992. Dennis is engaged in research, teaching, and writing in many fields, including weather, gardening, meditation, the human organism, and self-transformation. He founded the Coros Institute to teach and promote dialogue experiences based on esoteric wisdom. Dennis Klocek's books include Sacred Agriculture: The Alchemy of Biodynamics (2012); Climate: Soul of the Earth (2010); and The Seer's Handbook (2005)."
