One of Herman Melville's best-known novels is Benito Cereno, published in 1855, and based on the real story of Spaniard Benito Cerreno, whose ship, the Tryal, seized in 1804 the slaves that he was taking by Pacific waters bound for Lima, where I expected to sell them.
