American Cities in Flux: How They are Changing America and How America is Changing Them examines the evolving dynamics of urban centers and their role in shaping America's sociopolitical landscape. The book features an in-depth look at five iconic American cities—New York, Detroit, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. As it depicts their vibrancy and resilience, it delves into the historical events, cultural changes, and economic shifts that have influenced their growth.

One thing is stressed above almost everything else. Each city responds in its own unique way to challenges, such as the pandemic, as well as to fortuitous events, such as the arrival of immigrants who can build their industrial base—and these responses mold their evolution.

American Cities in Flux is ideal for courses in urban studies, sociology, American history, and geography. It is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate levels, providing a comprehensive resource for understanding the complexities of urban change and resilience across different eras and contexts.
