This book provides a comprehensive, systematic overview of original theoretical, experimental, and numerical studies in the building services engineering domain. It brings together different strands of the topic, guided by the two key features of energy savings and reduction of the pollutant emissions. Technical, economic, and energy efficiency aspects related to the design, modelling, optimisation, and operation of diverse building services systems are explored.

This book includes various theoretical studies, numerical and optimisation models, experiments, and applications in this field, giving an emphasis to:

indoor environment

quality assurance;

energy analysis, modelling,

and optimisation of heating systems;

improving the energy

performance of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems;

valorising the solar and

geothermal energies;

analysis of thermal

energy storage technologies;

hydraulic simulation

and optimisation of water distribution systems; and

improving the energy

efficiency of water pumping.

With 11 pedagogically structured chapters, containing numerous illustrations, tables, and examples, this book provides researchers, lecturers, engineers, and graduate students with a thorough guide to building service engineering.

Professor Ioan Sarbu is a Doctoral Advisor and Emeritus Professor in the Department of Civil and Building Services Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara (UPT), Romania. He obtained his diploma in civil engineering from the “Traian Vuia” Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara in 1975 and his Ph.D. from the Timisoara Technical University in 1993. Additionally, he is a European Engineer (Eur. Eng.), as designated by the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (Brussels) in 2001. He was Head of the Building Services Department within the UPT for almost 20 years, until his retirement in 2017, and between 2001 and 2017, he was also Head of the National Building Equipment Laboratory in Timisoara. His main research interests are related to refrigeration systems, heat pumps, and solar energy conversion and storage. He is also active in the field of thermal comfort and environmental quality, energy efficiency and energy savings, water and heat distribution systems, and numerical simulations and optimisations in building services. He has published books, chapters, and numerous articles in indexed journals and proceedings of international conferences.
