Adolescence is a unique developmental period characterized by a time of dramatic physical and psychological changes. It is important for emerging professionals and trainees who wish to work with youth to be familiar with the developmental issues and current trends in substance use and co-existing mental disorders.

Adolescent Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders is a comprehensive and clinically-oriented resource aimed at students seeking a degree or certificate as an addiction counselor, as well as early-career professionals. The text is broken into three sections: adolescent development (covering physical and psychosocial development), comorbid disorders (such as externalizing and internalizing disorders and addictions), and interventions and treatment (featuring cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavior therapy, and motivational enhancement therapy, among others). Each chapter includes side-bar points of interest, summary highlights, discussion questions, recommendations for further reading, and learner's test questions. Several chapters include case vignettes.

This vital resource will be a must-have for trainees in social work, counseling, and psychology, as well as service providers.

Reviews for Adolescent Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

"Winters and Ingwalson write with passion, compassion, and authority in this incisive and eminently practical textbook. Adolescence substance abuse is an enormous problem in its own right, and sadly and all-too-commonly, the beginning of a pattern continuing into adult life. As these expert authors make clear throughout, the adolescent development of substance abuse can only truly be understood and managed in the context of underlying, comorbid psychological disorders. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to better understand substance abuse, especially students."" * Robert E. Emery, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Director of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law, Department of Psychology, University of Virginia, co-author of Abnormal Psychology now in its 9th edition * This comprehensive textbook provides an excellent overview of co-occurring substance use and mental health in youth. Engaging case vignettes and informative side bars highlight a chapter's key points. This reader-friendly textbook is the ideal teaching tool for students seeking a degree or certificate as an addiction counselor."" * Tammy Chung, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey * Adolescent Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders is a clearly written textbook appropriate for trainees and treatment providers learning about the specific needs of youth with dual diagnoses. It provides a straight forward, research-based account of adolescent development, psychopathology, and developmentally-appropriate assessment and treatment modalities. As an educator, I appreciate the inclusion of case vignettes, discussion questions, and additional resources to use in fostering student discussion and engagement with the material. All around a comprehensive introduction to the field."" * Kristen G. Anderson, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Adolescent Health Research Program (Principal Investigator), Reed College * Drs. Ken C. Winters and Ann Ingwalson's new textbook, Adolescent Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders, is comprehensive and compelling in content, yet concise and accessible in style. The book's 13 chapters are well sequenced, and iteratively increase readers' knowledge about co-occurring substance use and mental health problems among teenagers. The authors do a particularly job summarizing current knowledge regarding cannabis use and mental health and are to be commended for their excellent coverage of process addictions and recovery programs. Winters and Becher-Ingwalson's Adolescent Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders is an excellent choice for coursework in programs training professional addiction counselors. * Eric F. Wagner, PhD, Director, Community-Based Research Institute, Professor, Florida International University, Licensed Psychologist, State of Florida * The intersection of psychiatric disorders and substance use disorder is arguably the most foundational area in the prevention and treatment of addictions. Winters and Ingwalson provide essential coverage of core etiological factors predicting substance use disorders and process addictions. Throughout, there are explanations of the roles of psychiatric disorders, developmental trends, and brain development in the etiology of substance use disorders and process addictions. Current evidence-based treatment and prevention models for substance use disorders are explored in depth to provide the reader with information on important trends in the intervention and prevention field in addiction. Using foundational coverage of best clinical practices in treatment and delivery of care, this text fills an essential need in training the next generation of mental health and addiction professionals. * Serena M. King, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychology, Hamline University *"
