A River Runs Under It: 40 Years on a Houseboat in Oregon looks back at how the author came to find her place in a floating home outside of Portland. Although she originally thought living on the river would last a few years at most, Andrea Carlisle found herself staying on despite hardships and inconveniences, including her house almost keeling over after a snowstorm and a family of beavers moving into her basement. The book contains a glossary of houseboat terminology with both funny and poignant anecdotes helping to define each term. Photographs of houseboat life, including bird and animal life, are sprinkled throughout the text.

I was born in North Dakota and grew up in the Midwest, but I've also lived for short periods of time on the east coast, Canada, and Kuwait. For the past four decades, I've resided on a houseboat outside of Portland, Oregon, in the company of various animals, including cats, dogs, otters, and beavers, as well as eagles, osprey, herons, hawks, cormorants, and a wide variety of songbirds. Stories, essays, poems, and articles have appeared in various publications over the years, most recently in McSweeney's and Yes magazine. Currently, I'm working on a collection of essays on the topic of aging to be published by OSU Press in Spring, 2021.
