In A Reasonable Christian Faith, Daniel Kern makes a case that it is possible to be a reasonable person and hold Christian faith. Drawing on classic philosophical sources, Kern establishes the reasonability of belief in a God. Then, drawing on the life and words of Jesus, he outlines what a Christian faith consists of. While numbers of people who claim to be Christians act in unchristian manners, and numbers of people hold that all religious belief is unreasonable, Kern claims that both excesses are incorrect and that there is a way to tread a line between them.

Reviews for A Reasonable Christian Faith

There is much to appreciate in Dan Kern's A Reasonable Christian Faith! Through his thoughtful engagement with many different philosophers, philosophies, biblical passages, theological dilemmas, and ethical concerns, we see a sincere, contemplative, and humane vision of Christianity. There is a refreshing genuineness to his writing that invites the reader to consider a Christianity that is intellectually honest, ethically grounded, and still unmistakably Christian. --Ryan C. Falcioni, Chaffey College Kern provides a thoughtful, practical, readable explanation of Christian belief, bringing his wide-ranging knowledge of philosophy and theology. He addresses the essential concerns of faith such as who is God and what is God like, what sort of relationship can we have with God, age-old concerns such as the problem of suffering, and more contemporary concerns such as possible Christian responses to LGTBQ issues. Clear and useful reading! --Andrew Gustafson, Creighton University Dan Kern demonstrates philosophically and rationally that faith in God is based on experience and the evaluation of evidence, not ignoring evidence (contra the 'New Atheists' and others). Furthermore, he claims, and I agree, that Jesus is our best image of God, a deliverer from oppression, who challenged the way of power with the way of love. Kern's subsequent discussion of LGBTQIA here is worth the price of many books, as is his honest discussion of the absence of God. --Karen Strand Winslow, Azusa Pacific Seminary
